Special Techniques
For pathologists, researchers and other physicians across the country, Johns Hopkins Special Techniques laboratories perform a broad range of specialty tests on surgical specimens for clinical trials and scientific study. Diagnostic service is available from individual consultants.
There are three laboratories:
Originally established to support the work of Hopkins' researchers and physicians, today, their respective expertise and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment are available for smaller laboratories or for individuals seeking the extensive technical knowledge and experience for which Johns Hopkins Medical Laboratories is recognized.
Expertise
Laboratory directors are recognized authorities in their fields, with extensive technical knowledge as well as a thorough understanding of the concerns of their clinical and research clients. Technical staff rank among the best in the country, also, exemplifying Hopkins' high professional standards.
Accreditation
Expect same-day review of heart biopsies. Final written reports will be faxed within three days, unless special studies such as electron microscopy or immunohistochemistry are required. In that case, reports may take several days longer. Dr. Hruban is available for telephone consults 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

- Timely Results
- Expect results within 1-3 days of our having received glass slides, wet tissue, or paraffin blocks.

Electron Microscopy (TEM) Services
- Comprehensive services include:

- specimen preparation
- thick and ultra-thin sectioning
- thorough analysis and photography of ultra-thin sections with electron microscope
- computerized photography (on site)
- special staining techniques, e.g., immuno gold stain.
- Timely Results
- Expect results within 2-4 days of our having received thin- sectioned grids, or epoxy blocks.

Immunopathology Laboratory
