Combined Research and Clinical Fellowship

A two-year program combining clinically oriented surgical and biopsy pathology of gastrointestinal case material for sign-out by Drs. Belur Bhagavan, Elizabeth Montgomery, Michael Torbenson, Anirban Maitra, Christine A. Iacobuzio-Donahue, Robert Anders, and John H. Yardley. This includes an active consult service for which the fellow is responsible.

Specialty experience in liver disease is provided by Drs. John K. Boitnott, Michael Torbenson, and Robert Anders. Dr. Ralph Hruban, Director of the GI Pathology / Liver Division, provides diagnostic and research experience in pancreatic diseases.

The fellow participates in clinical rounds and in housestaff and medical student teaching. In the second year the fellow is appointed an Assistant by The Johns Hopkins Hospital and takes full responsibility for sign-out of gastrointestinal case material. Research is an integral part of the program during both years and may have either a clinical or an experimental emphasis. There are multiple opportunities for collaborative studies in gastroenterology and in basic research in this and other departments.

In addition, a separate one year fellowship position in GI / Liver Pathology is offered. This fellowship parallels the two-year program, but does not include the sign-out opportunities of the two-year program.

Requirements: Minimum of two full years Anatomic Pathology. Fellows must be able to obtain Maryland licensure by the second year of the program.

Stipends: Commensurate with the candidate's level of postgraduate training.

Applications: For application forms or questions:

Dr. Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue
Department of Pathology

Applications should be received by January 1 for a July 1 starting date in the next calendar year (eg, an application submitted by Jan 1, 2007 will be for a July 1, 2008 start); supporting documents should be received by March 15 (eg, by Mar 15, 2007 in previous example). This timetable updates and supercedes all previously announced timetables (eg, as in the Directory for Pathology Training Programs in the United States and Canada, 2005-2006); requests for variations from this updated timetable should be directed to Dr. Iacobuzio-Donahue.

Applicants should clearly state if they are applying for the one-year fellowship, for the two-year program, or for both.

Research-only Post-Doctoral Positions

A variety of research fellowships are available in the division. Each of these research fellowships is supervised by one of the research faculty. Please contact them directly.

Current Yardley Fellows

We are pleased to announce that the current recipient of this fellowship is a talented young pathologist:

Jennifer Scudiere, M.D.

Her fellowship activities include patient care, teaching and she is currently focusing on clinically-oriented research evaluating new aspects of colonic neooplasia with special attention given to sessile serrated adenomas of the colon. She is also working on projects evaulating endoscopic mucosal resection of the esophagus as treatment for esophageal neoplasia and exploring the nature of some as-yet-uncharacterized cellular changes in adenomatous gastrointestinal lesions.
