Combined Residency - Research Fellowship Program
Most residents who enter a fellowship do so at the end of their residency training or after completing their AP or CP segment. However, under appropriate
conditions residents may begin their fellowship training by interrupting their residency program. Fellowship programs entered after receiving the M.D. degree can be
expected to meet fully the "credentialling year" requirement of the American Board of Pathology.
Applicants for the Pathology Residency Program who would like to learn more about fellowship opportunities should first contact either:
Edward McCarthy, MD, Director, Residency Training Program or
Terry Aman, Supervisor of Educational Programs
Research opportunities are available to all interested Pathology residents. In addition, the department has research-fellowship residency positions that assure a
funded year of research as a fellow to those accepted. Those positions are available to applicants with a strong background in research who wish to combine clinical
and research training during their residency years. A PhD is not required. However, MD applicants without a PhD are expected to have spent at least one year in
research, with a record of research productivity. These research-fellowship residency positions are available for all qualified residents to pursue AP, CP, or AP/CP
training followed by 1 or more years of research training.
A member of the Medical Scientist Advisory Committee will serve as an advisor to each resident in the research-fellowship program. The advisor will be identified
during the resident's first year in training. Applicants begin full-time research following clinical training. The length of clinical training is flexible and will depend on the
specific clinical track chosen (AP, CP, or AP/CP) and credentials (PhD or other credentialling year).
Residents are expected to continue to attend conferences and participate in other clinical activities on a limited basis during the research period. The advisor will help
identify appropriate activities for each resident based on his or her own interests. Support for one year of research will be assured by the Department of Pathology.
Residents will be provided with guidance in applying for other forms of research support, as part of their academic career development. Residents who obtain
extramural research funding with salary support below their PGY level will receive supplementary salary support from the Department or another appropriate source.
Residents are encouraged to select research mentors in the Department of Pathology, but may work with investigators in other departments. An oversight committee
will review and approve the choice of the research mentor before the resident begins the first research year. Residents are encouraged to select research laboratories
located on the main medical school/hospital campus. Special approval from the committee is required for research at another location.
