- What other phlebotomy training programs are there?
Both Baltimore City and Baltimore County Community Colleges offer courses. Check within your respective counties also.
- Do you have to be certified to perform phlebotomy?
JHMI Department of Pathology does not currently require certification, but it is highly recommended. Phlebotomy is also performed by other healthcare professionals, research assistants, medical and nursing students who may or may not hold other certifications.
- What is an "Inpatient 24 Hour Phlebotomy Stop"?
There will occasionally be patients whose veins are extremely difficult to palpate or access. A phlebotomist has a maximum of two venipuncture attempts. If she/he is not successful, a second phlebotomist may be called upon in an effort to obtain the blood samples. If the second phlebotomist is unable to obtain samples, the second phlebotomist will advise the charge nurse that the patient is being placed on a 24 hour stop. The objective is that this period of time will hopefully allow a traumatized or overused vein to recuperate to the point in which a successful venipuncture can be achieved.
