Division of Transfusion Medicine

About Us

The Transfusion Medicine Division is one of the busiest in the country and can provide opportunities to perform tasks that represent the entire spectrum of Immunohematology practice. Annually, well over 78,000 blood products, components and derivatives pass through its' doors. This Division provides comprehensive support to all routine and specialized areas to care for obstetrical, neonatal, solid organ and bone marrow transplant, general and open-heart surgery patients, and patients with hematological disorders. The Transfusion Medicine Division works closely with the Johns Hopkins Hematopoietic and Therapeutic Support (HATS) Center to provide component support for adult and pediatric Oncology patients. Specialized diagnostic services are performed by the AABB accredited Reference Laboratory, one of only 50 so designated nationwide. It provides resolution of complex serologic problems, access to the rare donor file, consultation services, and platelet antibody testing. In keeping with the mission of the hospital, the Division of Transfusion Medicine is actively involved in medical education and research. The staff trains Pathology residents, Fellows of Transfusion Medicine, Specialist in Blood Bank students, and MT and MLT students in the field of clinical laboratory sciences.
