Description: Students are trained to function as first year house-officers on the autopsy service. They become responsible for work-up and final sign-out of their cases and in other respects participate fully in the life of the department. There are informal case conferences at the autopsy table and at multiheaded microscopes, and each student presents a case at a department-wide conference. Brief supplementary exposures to surgical pathology and forensic pathology are offered to interested students. Those who take the elective for longer than one quarter can also opt to engage in a research project. The elective can be taken year round by 3rd and 4th year sutdents. Additionally, the course is made available to second year students in the fourth and summer quarters, along with similar electives at Bayview as a special lottery option.

Description: This course will offer an opportunity to see and experience at first hand the
entire spectrum of diagnostic activities in anatomic pathology. Students will perform
autopsies and rotate in surgical pathology and /or cytopathology, functioning at the level
of a first-year resident in Pathology. They will perform gross dissections, dictate
clinical summaries, review microscopic sections, and sign out the autopsies and surgical
pathologic material under senior staff supervision. At the end of the rotation students
present a seminar to the AP faculty and staff, based on an interesting case or topic
encountered during their Bayview experience.

Description: This course provides an opportunity for medical students to experience the role of transfusion medicine in the care of adult and pediatric patients with a variety of conditions in one of the largest and most active blood banks in the country. Students will learn about different types of blood products and the indications for their use in various clinical settings. Alternatives to blood transfusion will also be discussed. Students will take an active role in consultations from the transfusion medicine and aphaeresis services. Interested students are encouraged to undertake small research projects. Particularly recommended for students interested in pathology, surgery, hematology, oncology, and intensive care medicine.

Description: This course will focus primarily on the analytical method, quality assurance and the clinical interpretation of biochemical and immunological tests performed in the Clinical Chemistry division. Laboratories include proteomics, automated chemistry, critical care, immunoassay for hormone and tumor markers, as well as toxicology, and drug monitoring. Description: An opportunity to become acquainted with the clinical significance in health and in disease of morphologic changes in cells and other elements of the cellular specimen. Description:
A special one-year fellowship for medical students in good standing who have completed their second year in an accredited medical school. This fellowship is highly competitive and it is designed to give the student an in-depth learning experience in pathology. The fellowship is research-based, and the research can be either be anatomic or clinical pathology. The research is performed under the direction of a faculty mentor. In addition, the student is expected to participate in departmental conferences, meetings, and teaching activities. One year of credit toward board certification in pathology may be received for this fellowship.

Description: Students will acquire first-hand knowledge of legal medicine and the investigation of sudden, unexpected, and violent deaths by actively participating in all regular functions of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (near the University of Maryland Medical Center). Emphasis placed on medical-legal autopsy techniques and preparation of a medical-legal protocol. Students can participate in on-the-scene investigations and observe staff members giving testimony in court. Students attend rounds, lectures and seminars, and also have opportunities to participate in research projects conducted by staff members.

Description: This clerkship is designed to review and teach clinical
and technical aspects of medical Laboratory Immunology. Students
will rotate through the various Immunology Laboratory areas, including
monoclonal protein evaluation, autoimmune testing and infectious
disease serology. While on this rotation the student will be exposed
to a variety of immunologic tests, instructed in the effective use
and interpretation of these tests as well as have an opportunity
to participate in evolving informatics for patient reporting. Translational
research is an important component of the Immunology Laboratory.
The Cytokine Laboratory, a research arm of this Service laboratory,
provides the student a chance to learn about new and exciting areas
in Cytokine Biology. Here, cytokines, chemokines and adhesion molecules
are evaluated at both the protein and gene expression level in a
variety of clinical conditions. Finally, students are encouraged
to participate and present at monthly Immunology staff meetings.
This clerkship is recommended for all students interested in clinical
immunology.

Description: Laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases and therapeutic monitoring of antimicrobial agents. Correlation of laboratory information with disease presentation in patient. Description: This course is available as an elective part of the curriculum of the School of Medicine. It is also open to students of public health and to other graduate students. This course is given to provide an in-depth view of the mycotic infections of man. Each mycoses will be discussed and compared according to its specific microbiology, clinical presentations, immunology, epidemiology, and therapy. The laboratory section of the course will provide the student with samples of each fungus, specimen, and tissue sections to enable them to identify the important fungal pathogens. Newer diagnostic procedures to be demonstrated will include immunologic and biochemical tests.

Description: Students will be trained in the techniques of general surgical pathology and will then be responsible for the gross description, gross dissection and microscopic examination of their assigned cases. Students will be supervised by faculty members and senior residents and will participate in all conference activities in the division. The elective exposes the students to a variety of modern techniques employed in the pathology diagnosis of medical and surgical diseases and increases their awareness and understanding of the role played by surgical pathology in patient management. There are opportunities for exposure to other diagnostic pathology services(e.g. cytopathology and neuropathology).

It was next to be offered in 2004-05 in the Fourth Quarter but now is cancelled and replaced with "Special Studies in Research on Tissue Injury, Inflammation and Repair" (PH.188.840), which is a tutorial for 1 to 8 students at a time mutually convenient, preferrably in the fourth quarter. This tutorial covers the biochemical and pathophysiological mechanisms of acute and chronic inflammation, including immediate and delayed hypersensitivity and the response to physical, chemical, and microbial tissue damage, and discusses cell membrane function; capillary permeability; histamine, kinins, plasmin, complement, icosanoids; blood clotting; chemotaxis; and other inflammatory mediators produced by various blood cells.

SUBINTERNSHIP: A rotation in which the student assumes the role of an intern, including primary care of patients and sharing night call.
