"We may say that the university s birth takes place today, and I do not think it mere sentiment should we dwell with interest upon its concurrence with the centennial year of our national birth, and the birthday of him who led the nation from the throes of battle to maturity and peace." At 45, Daniel Coit Gilman then stepped to the podium to deliver his inaugural address, which was to set the tone for American higher education for the century to come. |

| welch.jhu.edu | In 1907, William Osler, MD, envisioned for the Hopkins Medical School, "on the Monument Street front...a beautiful structure in stone devoted to the library and museum." The result of that dream was a central library merging those of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Schools of Medicine and Hygiene that began service in the newly-built Welch Library building in the fall of 1929. Lt. Col. Fielding H. Garrison, editor of the Index Catalogue, was recruited from the Surgeon General's Library as Librarian. The building was named for William H. Welch, MD, honoring his role in the creation of the library and in the establishment of the department of the History of Medicine. |
