Hopkins team utilizes whole exome sequencing in biliary cancers.

In the past 5 years, novel technology has been developed which allows all of the genes in a cancer to be sequenced. This allows for identification of previously unsuspected mutations or alterations in the coding sequence of a cancer, which leads to variant proteins specific to the cancer which potentially can be targeted by relatively non-toxic therapies. The Hopkins team has recently applied this technology to biliary cancers. Preliminary data on these studies have been published in abstract form, and further data on larger numbers of these tumors is being prepared for submission for publication.
