The Research

Researchers associated with the NFPTR have been involved in a number of research studies that have advanced our understanding of pancreatic cancer. Below are a few of the key findings of NFPTR Researchers:

Demonstrated that there is evidence for a major gene or genes involved in the development of pancreatic cancer.
Researchers are actively working to identify any genes that may increase a person's risk of developing PC.
Established that healthy family members from families where there have been multiple cases of pancreatic cancer are at an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Further quantified the risk of developing pancreatic cancer for healthy relatives of pancreatic cancer patients.
Demonstrated that the BRCA2 gene is important in familial pancreatic cancer.
Showed that a combination of Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and CT scans can be an effective way to screen individuals who are at an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
Identification of risk factors for pancreatic cancer among individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish Ancestry.
Determined that individuals who are at an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer are interested in receiving genetic counseling despite the fact that we have not yet identified the gene or genes responsible for the large majority of familial pancreatic cancer.
