Raising Awareness of Pancreas Cancer

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)
The users of this Website came together to organize a National effort to increase awareness about pancreas cancer and to raise funds to fight this disease (PanCAN). This organization, founded in February 1999 by users of our chat room, works to focus national attention on the need to find the cure for pancreatic cancer. They provide public and professional education that embraces the urgent need for more research, effective treatments, prevention programs, and early detection methods.

In a remarkable demonstration of the power of a grass roots movement, users of this Website, who later became active in their organization, PanCAN, organized a spectacular "Evening with the Stars" fundraiser and pancreas cancer awareness benefit. The first gala was held on November 8, 1998, at the Beverly Hills Hotel and it attracted close to 30 stars (including Pat Boone, Stella Stevens, Marsha Wallace, Cindy Landon and Michael Landon Jr.). The evening was sold out, it raised over $100,000 to start a laboratory for the early detection of PC . Many who lost a loved one or who are fighting pancreas cancer also created quilt squares, and Teri Sechrist assembled them together. So many quilt squares were received that Teri made not one, but three quilts!

PanCAN's fundraising efforts currently fund the organization's own programs.

The monies raised through this Website are distributed under the direction of Dr. Ralph Hruban, are used primarily by our young faculty (primarily Drs. Goggins, Maitra, Klein and Iacobuzio-Donahue), and primarily support our research on the early detection of pancreatic cancer, the familial aggregation of pancreatic cancer, gene expression in pancreatic cancer, and for the development of mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Donations also support pilot projects, the purchase of cutting edge technology and research by our residents, fellow trainees, and more seasoned faculty.

love

Tea Body's, Inc. announced on April 5, 2005 that a portion of the proceeds from the sales of LOVE(TM) lip balm will be donated to the pancreatic cancer research program at Johns Hopkins.

In the spring of 2003, Crawford Shaw, the President of Tea Body's, Inc., was informed that his cousin, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Islet Cell Insulinoma, a rare pancreatic cancer. Elizabeth was eighteen years of age at the time and preparing for her freshman year at college. After learning of Elizabeth's diagnosis, she was invited to develop and design her own signature lip balm, with her initials imprinted on the product. Elizabeth decided ylang ylang and grapefruit was her favorite combination and requested that Tea Body's name the product "LOVE(TM)."

In the spirit of Elizabeth's message of LOVE, Tea Body's, Inc. will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of any LOVE(TM) product to the pancreatic cancer research program at Johns Hopkins.

purple ribbon

Purple ribbons are the national symbol for pancreas cancer. These and other products are available for purchase at PanCAN.

PanCAN is not affiliated with Johns Hopkins. Their proceeds benefit their own educational and advocacy programs. If you wish to donate directly to Pancreas Cancer research at Johns Hopkins, click here.
