Dave Sirkin will run for Pancreatic Cancer in the upcoming 2007 NYC Marathon
My name is Dave Sirkin and I will be running my third NYC Marathon this November. I am raising money for pancreatic cancer research in memory of my grandfather Max Sirkin who succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1986 and in honor of my father, Don Sirkin who is one of the lucky ones who was diagnosed in the early stages of the disease and has since had successfully surgery.
Facts: Facts: Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly of all types of cancer. This year 37,170 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and about 33,370 will die from it. Despite the high mortality rate, the federal government spends woefully little money on pancreatic cancer research. There is no reliable screening test for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. Symptoms are often vague and easily confused with other diseases. The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) cancer research budget for 2005 was $4.825 billion. Of this, only an estimated 66 million dollars was spent on pancreatic cancer research - a mere 1% of the NCI’s total cancer research budget!
Donations 80% of each donation goes directly to support pancreatic cancer science--particularly our young investigators. The remaining 20% of your donation goes to the Dean's office at Hopkins. The Dean's Office supplies infrastructure support to the pancreatic cancer research labs (things such as paper towels, lighting, heating for the building, lab space, etc). Also, they have graciously worked with me personally to develop this fundraising page. For that, I am especially grateful. My goals are:
- Raise $2,000 for pancreatic cancer research at Johns Hopkins,
- Help those suffering from this dreadful disease,
- Raise awareness of the disease
- Finish the marathon!!!!!
If you would like to donate, please click here and please put in honor of Don Sirkin.
Thanks for the support!!!
