Dr. Voltaggio is an associate professor in the Division Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology since March 1st, 2014 and serves as the Director of our Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Fellowship. Dr. Voltaggio has made significant contributions to the fields of gastrointestinal pathology and these major accomplishments have led to her regional, national, and international reputation as a leader in this field.

Dr. Voltaggio has authored multiple peer-reviewed original clinical research articles, invited review articles, and two textbooks. Though her clinical research career has been focused on gastrointestinal pathology she is specially interested in inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract. She has identified novel histologic patterns of inflammation associated with certain infections. Dr. Voltaggio has also authored a number of invited reviews on this subject, reflecting the national recognition of her expertise in this area.

Dr. Voltaggio directs the Hopkins Gastrointestinal and Liver Fellowship, which became ACGME-equivalent under her directorship. More than half of the graduating fellows have embraced successful academic careers at institutions across the nation. In addition, she directs the annual Johns Hopkins GI/Liver CME course, which attracts a wide variety of local, national, and international participants including practicing pathologists and trainees. Dr. Voltaggio is heavily involved in resident and fellow teaching and gives a number of yearly, well-attended noon lectures to the pathology residents encompassing aspects of luminal gastrointestinal pathology.

Dr. Voltaggio devotes approximately 50% of her time to clinical work and is recognized nationally for her clinical excellence in diagnostic gastrointestinal pathology. She receives consults from around the world and is invited to speak nationally and internationally on diagnostic gastrointestinal pathology. She is well-respected among JHH clinicians for her diagnostic acumen, collegiality, and effective communication.

Lastly, as a member of an underrepresented minority group herself, Dr. Voltaggio is fiercely dedicated to promoting diversity in our field. She is an active member of the Pathology Diversity Committee and has been a key member of our diversity initiative. She has been a leader and participant in visits to medical schools across the country enriched for underrepresented minorities.
