The team at Hopkins just published a major paper on precancerous lesions in the pancreas. This paper, published in the journal Nature, describes a study conducted by Ashley Kiemen, Laura Wood, Denis Wirtz, Ralph Hruban, Alicia Braxton and other in the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center. In a major advance, the team studied the genetics of pancreatic precursor lesions (called “PanINs”) in three-dimensions. The team calculated a mean burden of 13 PanINs per cubic centime of pancreas and extrapolated that the normal adult pancreas harbors hundreds of PanINs. What an extraordinary number of precursor lesions we all have! The team also discovered extensive multifocality and genetic heterogeneity of PanINs raising fundamental questions about mechanisms that drive precancer initiation in the human pancreas.
