The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is CAP and CLIA-certified and is licensed in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, and New York (for Telomere Length testing only).

Specimen Requirements
Please see the Test Menu for specimen requirements for specific tests.
Blood and Bone Marrow
A. For Telomere Flow FISH, keep specimens at room temperature, and ship overnight. Specimen requirements are:
- Adults: 12-18 cc in yellow top ACD tubes.
- Infants and children: Minimum 3 cc in lavender top EDTA tube.
- Samples will be rejected if blood tubes are not filled properly, if blood is received >72 hours of collection, or if blood was not stored at room temperature.
B. For all other tests, lavender top EDTA tubes are preferred. Refrigerate and ship overnight with cold pack. Do not freeze.
FFPE Tissue
- Include a copy of the surgical pathology report with the specimen.
- Blocks to be tested must contain tumor tissue. For Microsatellite Instability testing, normal tissue is also required. If no block containing Normal tissue is available, please submit blood or a buccal swab from the patient.
- FFPE tissue may be submitted as slides (preferred) or blocks.
- If slides are submitted:
- Slides should be cut with PCR precautions.
- H&E slides should be adjacent to unstained slides in series.
- Please see the Test Menu for number of slides required for specific tests.
- Package slides in appropriate containers to prevent breakage.
- These specimens may be shipped at ambient temperature.
Buccal Swabs
- Buccal swabs may be submitted for patient and/or donor for BMT Comprehensive testing and for Normal tissue for Microsatellite Instability testing.
- These specimens may be shipped at ambient temperature.
DNA
Extracted DNA is accepted as a specimen type under certain circumstances, either following specific request and consultation with the lab director, or for Pre-BMT specimens not otherwise obtainable. In these instances, the extraction must be performed in a CLIA-certified laboratory or a laboratory meeting equivalent (or more stringent) requirements as determined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and/or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
