Overview
The Johns Hopkins Division of Hematopathology fellowship began in 1993 and became an ACGME certified fellowship in 1997. Its service load includes nearly 17,000 flow cytometry exams, 3,000 bone marrow and tissue exams, and approximately 1,000 consultations per year.
Our Hematopathology Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship that emphasizes diagnostic aspects of hematopathology. We accept two fellows per academic year. Candidates must be Board eligible or certified in anatomic and/or clinical pathology. Fellows are trained in morphologic examination of blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes, and particular emphasis is given to use of ancillary techniques.
The fellows have direct responsibility for flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry, and they gain experience in cytogenetics and molecular pathology. In addition, the program includes exposure to coagulation and other aspects of laboratory hematology.
Our fellows interact directly with the clinical staff in both adult and pediatric hematology and oncology and with physicians outside the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions who submit material for consultation. There is significant flexibility for tailoring the fellowship to individual interests. Participation in research is encouraged and the potential exists for pursuing research in greater depth by extending the fellowship beyond a single year for candidates with independent funding.
Applying
The Johns Hopkins Hematopathology Fellowship Program participates in the NRMP Hematopathology Match. Candidates must be Board eligible or be certified within one year of completion of training in anatomic and/or clinical pathology. We will begin reviewing applications for the 2028 - 2029 academic year around November 6, 2026. To be considered for interviews beginning in January 2027, all application materials should be received by Friday, December 18, 2026.
To apply, please download our application form and submit it by email to the program director at [email protected]. Completed applications must include:
- A fully completed application form
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Personal statement of interest

Meet Our Current Fellows
Amy Salas, DO
Amy Salas grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing her AP/CP residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. She is interested in pursuing a career in either private practice or a community-based hospital setting, though she remains open to an academic career. Her interests include general surgical pathology and hematopathology, with a particular preference—and true love—for hematopathology because of its integration of flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, and morphology, as well as its close collaboration with clinical hematology/oncology teams. She is excited to learn from the expansive and continuously growing flow cytometry laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital and to have the opportunity to visit the NIH and work with Dr. Jaffe. Living in the Baltimore area has also been especially enjoyable, as it reminds her of her hometown near Philadelphia, but on a slightly smaller scale.
Vorapat (Pat) Vorapanya, MD, MPH
Vorapat (Pat) Vorapanya is originally from Bangkok, Thailand, where she earned her medical degree from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. She recently completed her AP/CP residency training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Having previously enjoyed city life, she is excited to call Baltimore home and looks forward to exploring its museums, parks, vibrant food scene, and the National Aquarium.
When it comes to hematopathology, her favorite blood cell is the macrophage (histiocyte). After completing her hematopathology fellowship, she will pursue a Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. She is then looking forward to beginning an academic career where she can integrate her interests in hematopathology, molecular pathology, and global pathology through clinical practice, teaching, and collaborative research to advance diagnostic pathology and improve global health. She is also more than happy to (almost) complete her more than decade-long journey of medical training!
During her free time, she enjoys reading novels, watching live sports, cooking, and traveling the world.
