Transfusion Medicine Fellowship

Overview

Explore the world of Transfusion Medicine through our ACGME-accredited fellowship program, a dynamic one or two-year program crafted by the Transfusion Medicine Division at The Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Pathology. Immerse yourself in a rich learning environment at our tertiary academic center, where rotations take you through key areas such as the Johns Hopkins Hospital blood bank, Hemapheresis and Transfusion Support (HATS) Clinic, Immunogenetics Laboratory, American Red Cross (ARC) blood services headquarters in Baltimore, and the Cellular Therapy Laboratory of The Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our fellowship is a perfect blend of theory and hands-on practical experience in Transfusion Medicine. Delve into diverse aspects including blood bank administration, clinical transfusion practices, blood center/donor operations, immunohematology, therapeutic apheresis, cellular therapy, clinical coagulation, and immunogenetics.

The first year is not just about learning – it's about doing. Engage in a clinically oriented research project, a vital component of our fellowship. For those eager for more, an optional second year sets the stage for an investigative career in Transfusion Medicine. With a diverse faculty, you can tailor your projects to your interests – think epidemiology of transfusion-transmitted infections, platelet and red cell immunohematology, molecular biology, alternative transfusion techniques, and patient blood management.

Two positions may be offered per year.
Successfully completing our program qualifies you to take the Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Subspecialty exam of the American Board of Pathology (ABPath).

Welcome to a fellowship that transforms passion into expertise.
