Research
Pathobiology PhD student research is aimed toward the discovery of the basic mechanisms that cause disease with the goal of developing fresh insights leading to improved treatments or preventative measures.
Students are rigorously trained in mechanisms of disease by clinical and basic science experimental pathologists, have unparalleled access to human tissues and specimens in health and disease for translational research objectives and are required to complete translational rotations in which they are immersed in the practice of clinical pathology with direct relevance to their research projects. All facets of the program are geared towards this focus on human pathology, including innovative coursework on research reproducibility as relevant to human tissue-based methods.
Specializations
Students are prepared with formalized classroom instruction in all areas of disease mechanisms. Under the guidance of faculty advisors, students undertake specialized training (including thesis research) in one of six programmatic areas:
- Cellular & Molecular Pathology
- Immunopathology
- Microbiology & Infectious Disease
- Neoplasia
- Neuropathology
- Vascular Biology & Hemostasis (Cardiovascular Disease)
Research Facilities
Our students have access to the state of the art research facilities at Johns Hopkins for their experimental studies.
Student researchers have access to core equipment and facilities as well as Department of Pathology facilities that include:
- A research histology lab
- A research immunohistochemistry lab
- Molecular diagnostics and cytogenetics labs
- A flow cytometry lab, computerized image analysis and transmission
- Extensive tissue banks
- A full-service photography lab
- A departmental data system computer network
Our fully equipped laboratories support studies ranging from molecular, cellular, and physicochemical analyses through whole animal and informatics-based techniques.
